PASTOR'S NOTE: Feb 01, 2026

Dear Saints,

You certainly won’t find it in the liturgical calendar, but tomorrow is Groundhog Day, and that means it’s a perfect opportunity to watch the 1993 classic of the same name. Believe it or not, more than a few Catholic commentators have reflected on the movie’s surprisingly rich life lessons.

Most of you are probably very familiar with Groundhog Day, but for anyone who isn’t, the film explores the theme of conversion without ever naming it outright. The main character - Phil Connors - begins trapped in a cycle of selfishness, pride, and despair, repeating the same day over and over again because he refuses to change his mind or heart.

But over time, through suffering, humility, and honest self-examination, he begins to grow in virtue. He learns patience, practices charity, begins to revere honesty, and finally understands what it means to will the good of others without expectation of reward. That slow moral awakening mirrors the Catholic understanding of repentance and sanctification: real transformation is not instant, but formed through daily choices, discipline, and allowing grace to work quietly through ordinary life.

The movie is also an opportunity to contemplate the nature of time, mercy, and redemption. Where Phil Connors refuses to change, the endless repetition of February 2nd echoes the monotony of sin. Where he is awakened to the joy of ritual and steady growth, the endless repetition of February 2nd is like the steady rhythm of the liturgical life: growth through the faithful repetition of prayer, sacrifice, and love. Phil’s “salvation” comes not through escape or control, but through self-gift and love.  By the end, the curse lifts not because he earns it, but because he has become capable of real communion with a beloved. In that way, Groundhog Day becomes a funny and gentle - if imperfect - parable of grace. It is a reminder that holiness is forged in the ordinary, and that redemption is always possible, even (especially?) in the most familiar places.

Christ’s Peace,

Father Daniel
