PASTOR'S NOTE: OCT 04, 2026

Dear Saints,

This Sunday we’ll celebrate the Blessing of Animals, a tradition dating back to the deep reverence St. Francis of Assisi held for all of God’s creation.

Pets invite us to look beyond ourselves and recognize the beauty and dignity of the creatures entrusted to our care. Their innocence demands our patience, kindness, tenderness, and generosity. In short, we are more human for having loved an animal.

Of course, it’s not just a one-way relationship with animals. They offer us a special kind of love too, uncomplicated by agenda and free from guile. They remind us that true friendship isn’t primarily found in grand gestures, but rather in loyalty, companionship, and simple delight in one another.

As we bring forth our beloved dogs and cats (and others!) to receive their blessing, it’s also a good opportunity to reflect on the Saint behind the simplicity of this day. It’s been said that 12th century residents of Assisi called Francis a fool, but he knew otherwise. Consoled by God’s call and strengthened by mutual devotion, he and his companions lived a Gospel life that ran counter to the culture of their times. Francis willingly died to the riches many people would kill for, and it’s exactly there that he found abundant life.

Christ’s Peace,

Father Daniel
